Cinema Club: Thelmarama in Residence
Update: Thanks again for everyone for coming to our fourth screening with the Crocker Cinema Club. Lily Rushing did an amazing job in conducting the tour for our water themed Thelmarama screening. She showcased many amazing pieces throughout the museum. Thelma ended up choosing August in the Water.
For this screening we are exploring themes of water within the Crocker Art Museum's art collection. Thelma's choices are Pauline at the Beach (1983) a French romance comedy directed by Éric Rohmer, The Swimmer (1968) an American drama film directed by Frank Perry, and August in the Water (1995) a Japanese sci-fi drama directed by Gakuryu Ishii.
Local cinema club Thelmarama takes up residence at the Crocker to lead a film journey through the Museum’s permanent collection. This residency, which will span six individual screenings across the 2026 calendar year, uses the medium of film to explore themes, ideas, and artistic movements present in the galleries. Each screened film will be a surprise, so embrace adventure and join us for a fun-filled evening!

Update: Thanks again for everyone for coming to our third screening with the Crocker Cinema Club. Ziru Mo and Olive Olsen did a fantastic job in facilitating their tea ceremony as our pre-screening programming. Thelma ended up choosing Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz!
Thelma's choices are Perfect Days (2023) dir. by Wim Wenders, All That Jazz (1979) dir. by Bob Fosse, and Match Factory Girl (1990) dir. by Aki Kaurrismäki -- and as always, Thelma picks one (but we encourage you to watch the other choices!)
Please come at 6 PM to enjoy a pre-screening tea ceremony presented by Taohua Tea. Ziru and Olive of Taohua will be hosting a gongfu (工夫茶) tea ceremony, which is a traditional and ritualistic way to serve tea in East Asia.

The three film choices were First Cow, Days of Heaven, and Aguirre, the Wrath of God. Thelma picked First Cow and we were honored to have watched this film in the Crocker’s historic ballroom. Special thank you again to Willow Germs, Yolo County Archives, and California Revealed for allowing us to watch Oaks Heritage Trees of Sacramento Valley.
We're exploring themes of nature and human interaction within the Crocker's permanent collection and we're also hosting a short film screening on the history and impact of oak trees in the Sacramento Valley.
